Event Description

The Cyprus Institute organizes for the first time the sCYence FAIR 2019 on 15-16 March 2019, under the auspices of the Minister of Education and Culture, and with the support of Aglantzia Municipality. The event will be hosted at The Cyprus Institute’s facilities in Nicosia, and is open to all school science groups, ages 9 -18 from both the private and public sectors. Participation is free of any fees, and free transportation will be provided to school groups from cities outside Nicosia. Depending on the level of participation, more than one science group can participate from the same school.

The SCYENCE Fair 2019 aims to stimulate scientific interest and to encourage participation by young students and support the next generation of scientists from Cyprus. The event provides an opportunity of our young scientists to increase their awareness of the wonders of science, add to their knowledge, and broaden their scientific horizons. Students will get the chance to demonstrate their scientific projects to the public, and will get a chance to tour The Cyprus Institute’s facilities, attend related lectures, and enter a contest for the best presentation.

In this context, members of STARC, participating either in Promised and/or other RPF and EU-funded projects, organised a series of archaeological science-themed activities. Students of various ages became acquainted with human osteoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, and glass-making technology through hands-on demonstrations. In addition, Efthymia Nikita gave a brief lecture on ancient migration patterns, as deduced through the study of the human skeleton. An open-access online guide on Archaeological Science Classroom Activities is currently under preparation by CyI Promised members as a result of the Scyence Fair initiative!
